Looking Back at 2014
As the year is drawing to a close, I thought I would take a few moments to look back at 2014 and record the highlights. 2014 has been busy, hectic and wonderful. It has been full of ups and downs and I wouldn't change a thing.
The year of 2014 got off to a great start. We had a low key New Year's and then celebrated our first Valentine's Day as a married couple. We went out to eat and I made Nathan cupcakes. I was really starting to get into the groove of cooking and baking.
I also officially started Whitney Skirvin Music at the beginning of 2014! It was a huge leap of faith, but I am so happy that I decided to take that leap!
In March, we made a big decision to expand our family. We adopted my favorite puppy in the entire world, our Chihuahua-Italian Greyhound mix, Chimi!! It has been such an adventure watching her grow up. If you are interested in adopting a dog in the Nashville area, I highly recommend Agape Animal Rescue. They are amazing and they have the best dogs in town!
April 6th marked our 1 year wedding anniversary! We celebrated by taking a trip to the Dominican Republic. It was a wonderful experience and I could not have asked for a better man to stand by my side in life. I love you, Nathan!
May was the month we finally decided to put our house on the market. We are still waiting for the person who wants to buy our house, but we have faith that they are on their way. We have done a lot of work to our place and it has helped me to learn a lot more about all that goes into home ownership.
I also got an amazing opportunity to sing with Studio Tenn in their production of Les Miserables at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. This is one of my favorite musicals and it was so much fun to get to be a small part of it.
This summer I was reminded of my human frailty when I tragically sprained my ankle and had to be put in a walking boot and do a month of physical therapy. This whole experience has inspired me to take better care of my body.
Oktoberfest was my first non-wedding gig I have done in a very long time and it was such a fun experience! Getting up on that stage was such an exhilarating feeling and I want to do something similar again soon.
October also marked a big risk for me - chopping off all of my hair and dying it! I am not a risk taker when it comes to my hair, so it took me a long time to come to this decision, but I am so glad that I did. I love it!
November was a huge month for me, as I wrote my entire novel in the month of November with the help of NaNoWriMo! For more information on what NaNoWriMo is, and how you can do it next year, check out this blog post! 50,000 words down! Now I just have to edit the thing!
Unfortunately, Nathan's grandfather passed away in November, so we took a trip up to Ohio for the funeral. However, we were able to take some time and Nathan got to show me significant locations from his childhood that I had never gotten to see. It was a great trip overall.
The holidays rolled around and we went down to Texas to visit my family for Thanksgiving. When we got back to Nashville, I got to sing in Jesse Luke and Leah Samples wedding here in town. It was a beautiful ceremony. The next week, I flew down to Miami to sing in my friends' wedding, Gabriel and Patricia. Christmas and my 27th birthday rounded out the year.
I have to say, 2014 was an eventful year. I learned some valuable life lessons and made some unforgettable memories. As for next year, here are my resolutions:
- Take more pictures - I really fell down on the picture taking this year. I need to be better about that
- Take care of my body - I need to eat better and work out more.
- Be more intentional in my relationships - People are the most important part of my life, after my relationship with God. I need to be more intentional in ALL of my relationships.
